The Nzoia River is a significant 257-kilometer-long waterway in western Kenya and a major tributary to Lake Victoria. Originating from the slopes of Mount Elgon and the Cherangani Hills, it flows southwest through a vast drainage basin covering more than 12,700 square kilometers. The river is vital for the region's agricultural sector, supporting extensive sugarcane and maize farming through natural irrigation and water supply. Additionally, it provides hydroelectric potential and industrial water for factories, most notably the paper mills in Webuye. However, the Nzoia is also notorious for causing severe seasonal flooding in the lower Budalangi plains, leading to displacement and destruction of property. Environmental challenges such as high sedimentation rates and pollution from agricultural runoff remain serious concerns, as they degrade the river's health and negatively impact the fishing industry in the receiving waters of Lake Victoria.
