Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake located in central Kenya, sitting at an elevation of 1,754 meters within the Great Rift Valley. It is world-renowned for hosting massive flocks of lesser flamingos that feed on the abundant cyanobacteria in its soda-rich waters, creating a distinctive pink hue on the shoreline. The surrounding Lake Nakuru National Park, established in 1961 and covering about 188 square kilometers, serves as a critical sanctuary for diverse wildlife. It is particularly noted for its successful rhinoceros conservation program, protecting both white and black rhinos, and its population of the rare Rothschild's giraffe. Geographically, the lake is fed by seasonal rivers like the Njoro and Makalia but lacks an outward drainage, making its water chemistry highly sensitive. In 2011, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Kenya Lake System. Despite its protected status, the lake faces ecological pressures from urban runoff from the nearby city of Nakuru and regional agricultural expansion.

Getting there

This famous soda lake is typically accessed through the main gates of its surrounding nature reserve. Most visitors arrive via organized tour vehicles or robust private cars on unpaved local tracks.

Best season

While it can be visited year-round, the dry seasons generally provide the best road conditions for driving. Flamingo populations can fluctuate very heavily depending entirely on the local water levels.

The terrain consists of a central alkaline lake surrounded by muddy shores, wooded hills, and grassy plains. Visitors usually experience the area solely from the comfort of a vehicle on dirt tracks.

What to bring

Safari-appropriate clothing, dust protection, and high-quality sunblock are standard local recommendations. A good zoom lens or binoculars are vital for observing the flamingos from a proper distance.

Parking

Vehicles are mostly driven continuously, but designated picnic sites and viewpoints offer safe parking areas. Never step out of the vehicle at any time outside of these specifically marked safe zones.

Safety

Because this area hosts dangerous wild animals, walking is strictly prohibited in most sections of the reserve. The highly alkaline water is also unsuitable for human contact, making swimming impossible.
