Lokitaung Gorge (Kenya)

Weather…

Lokitaung Gorge is an incredibly remote, deeply rugged geographical formation situated in the hyper-arid, extreme northwestern corner of Turkana County near the Ethiopian border. Historically, this deeply unforgiving landscape was the site of the highly isolated Lokitaung Prison, where British colonial authorities banished the most prominent leaders of the Mau Mau rebellion, including Jomo Kenyatta, in 1953. The prisoners endured intensely brutal conditions, tasked with performing highly punitive, agonizing hard labor, explicitly designed to break their political will. The sheer isolation of the gorge, surrounded by baking hot, impassable desert terrain, made it an absolute fortress of colonial containment. Today, the ruins of the prison stand as a highly stark, deeply emotional monument to the immense suffering endured during the struggle for national liberation.
