Qal'a of Beni Hammad (Algeria)

Weather…

The Qal'a of Beni Hammad is a significant archaeological site located in the Maadid mountains, representing the first capital of the Hammadid dynasty. Founded in 1007 by Hammad ibn Buluggin, the fortified city became a brilliant center of Islamic civilization and North African culture during the 11th century. The ruins are situated at an altitude of over 1,000 meters and include the Great Mosque, which features a prayer hall that was once one of the largest in the Maghreb. Its 25-meter-high minaret is remarkably well-preserved and serves as a vital example of early Islamic architectural style in Algeria. The site also contains the remains of several grand palaces, such as Qasr al-Manar, which were decorated with intricate carvings and ceramics. After being destroyed by the Almohads in 1152, the city was largely abandoned, preserving its original layout for future generations. It was the first site in Algeria to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980.
