Lake Turkana (Kenya)

Weather…

Lake Turkana, formerly known as Lake Rudolf, is situated in the Great Rift Valley of northern Kenya and holds the title of the world's largest permanent desert lake. It is also the planet's largest alkaline lake, distinguished by its striking turquoise colour, which earned it the moniker 'The Jade Sea'. The surrounding landscape is defined by volcanic activity, ancient lava flows, and sparse vegetation, creating an almost otherworldly environment. The lake serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds and supports the world's largest population of Nile crocodiles, which breed on its central volcanic islands. Of immense scientific importance is the Koobi Fora region on the eastern shore, famously known as the 'Cradle of Mankind'. Numerous hominid fossils have been unearthed here, proving pivotal to our understanding of human evolution. Due to its unique ecological and paleontological significance, Lake Turkana was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Its harsh climate and remote location ensure it remains one of East Africa's most pristine wilderness areas.
