Djurdjura National Park in the Kabylie region is one of Algeria's most spectacular mountain reserves, known for its alpine landscapes and deep gorges. Spanning approximately 18,500 hectares, the park is dominated by the Djurdjura Mountains, whose highest peak, Lalla Khedidja, reaches an elevation of 2,308 meters. The region is characterized by impressive karst formations, including Africa's deepest cave, Anou Ifflis. Geographically, the massif acts as a natural barrier against humid Mediterranean winds, resulting in snowy winters and lush vegetation featuring cedar and holm oak forests. The park is home to diverse fauna, including the Barbary macaque, the side-striped jackal, and numerous species of birds of prey. Historically, the Djurdjura Mountains have been a symbol of resistance and the cultural identity of the Kabyle people, lending the national park deep socio-cultural significance. Visitors are drawn by the dramatic scenery, rugged rocks, and numerous thermal springs. Established in 1983, the facility is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and plays a central role in protecting North African high-mountain ecosystems.

Best season
The best time to visit Djurdjura National Park is from May to October, when weather is mild and trails are accessible. Winter can bring snow, making some areas impassable. Spring gives blooming flora and active animals.
Best time of day
Early morning is the quietest time in the mountains and your best chance to see Barbary macaques. Late afternoon is also good. Midday sun is intense, so plan for shade breaks.
Etiquette
Do not feed the Barbary macaques as it disrupts their natural behavior. Keep distance and avoid loud noises. Stay on marked trails and take your rubbish with you.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots are essential on rocky trails. Bring a jacket as weather can change quickly at altitude. Pack binoculars for wildlife and plenty of water.
Getting there
The park is in Kabylia, about 150 km east of Algiers. Reachable by car on well-maintained roads; buses run from Tizi Ouzou. The main entrance is near Tikjda.
What to expect
Barbary macaques are common but not always easy to spot. Patience on hiking trails increases chances. Enjoy the memorable mountain scenery even without sightings.
