Koobi Fora (Kenya)

Weather…

Koobi Fora is a highly remote, globally critical paleoanthropological site situated on the desolate, hyper-arid eastern shores of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. Often referred to as the 'Cradle of Mankind', the region features massive sedimentary deposits spanning millions of years, perfectly preserving the fossilized remains of early hominins. Since intensive exploration began under Richard Leakey in the late 1960s, the site has yielded highly spectacular discoveries, including fossilized skulls of Homo habilis and Homo erectus, fundamentally rewriting the timeline of human evolution. The landscape is brutally hot and unforgiving, characterized by highly eroded sandstone ridges and ancient volcanic ash layers. A small, highly isolated museum and research base operates here, serving international scientists braving the extreme desert conditions.
