Tikjda
Situated at an altitude of nearly 1,500 meters in the heart of the Djurdjura National Park, Tikjda is one of the most famous mountain destinations in Algeria. Tourists and locals alike visit this spot to escape the summer heat or to enjoy the snowy slopes during the winter months. The region gives a spectacular natural landscape characterized by deep valleys, steep cliffs, and extensive Atlas cedar forests. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. In spring and summer, numerous hiking trails attract visitors, leading to viewpoints like the Tighourdhine peak or the nearby Lake Agoulmime, the highest lake in Africa. Hikers can often spot Barbary macaques roaming freely in the forests. During winter, Tikjda transforms into a small ski resort that is particularly popular with families and beginners. Accommodations in Tikjda mainly consist of mountain hotels and chalets that serve traditional Algerian mountain cuisine, including hearty stews and grilled meats. The resort is located about 150 kilometers from Algiers and is best reached by private car via the city of Bouira. The mountain roads are scenic but require careful driving in winter due to snow and ice. The best time for hiking is spring, while the winter months cater to snow sports lovers.
