Often referred to as the 'Green Hills of Africa,' the Chyulu Hills are a geologically young volcanic range in southeastern Kenya. These rolling, emerald-green slopes offer a landscape that stands in stark contrast to the parched plains of neighboring Tsavo. One of the range's most extraordinary features is the Leviathan Cave, among the longest lava tubes in the world. Visitors are drawn here for exclusive walking safaris, horseback riding, and the chance to spot wildlife including elephants, buffalos, and leopards. The sunrise view of Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak is truly unforgettable. The vegetation is diverse, ranging from open grasslands to dense montane forests that act as vital water towers for the surrounding arid lowlands. Access is typically via light aircraft or a rugged 4x4 drive from Nairobi or Mombasa. The best time to visit is just after the rains (May to June or November) when the hills are at their most lively green. Accommodation is limited to a few highly exclusive lodges, ensuring a private and immersive wilderness experience.
