Baza is a fascinating city in Andalusia, in the north of the province of Granada, at the foot of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. The city has a rich historical heritage dating back to Iberian times; the famous "Dama de Baza" limestone statue from the 4th century BC was discovered here and is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. A unique feature of Baza is the Barrio de las Cuevas, a neighborhood where many inhabitants still live in modernized cave dwellings. In the city center, you'll find the remains of the Moorish Alcazaba fortress and the impressive Collegiate Church of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Incarnation. Local gastronomy is based on regional products; try the "gurullos" or local cured meats. The best time to visit is spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant. In summer, the "Cascamorras" festival features a unique cultural experience. Baza is easily accessible by car from Granada via the A-92 motorway.
