Mar Saba Monastery (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

Mar Saba Monastery is a massive complex clinging to the precipitous cliffs of the Kidron Valley in the Judean Desert. Established in 483 AD by Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, it stands as one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in existence. The site is famous for its fortress-like appearance and its adherence to ancient monastic traditions, including a strict rule that prohibits women from entering the main enclosure; female visitors can view the complex from the adjacent 'Women's Tower.' The monks continue to live an ascetic life, following rituals and schedules that have changed little since the Byzantine era. Overlooking the rugged terrain of Wadi en-Nar, Mar Saba remains a vital center of Greek Orthodox spirituality, housing the relics of its founder.
