Amman Citadel (Jordan)

Weather…

The Amman Citadel, perched atop Jabal al-Qal'a, the city's highest hill, is a sprawling archaeological site with evidence of human occupation dating back over 7,000 years. The complex contains remnants from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as significant structures from the Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods. Among its most prominent landmarks is the Temple of Hercules, built during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD), whose massive columns remain a defining feature of Amman's skyline. The site also features the 8th-century Umayyad Palace complex, distinguished by its restored domed audience hall, which served as the seat of government during the early Islamic era. A 6th-century Byzantine church further reflects the diverse religious history of the area. Located 850 meters above sea level, the Citadel has unparalleled panoramic views of the Jordanian capital's seven original hills. Today, the site is also home to the Jordan Archaeological Museum, showcasing national treasures across millennia.
