Qasr al-Abd (Jordan)

Weather…

Qasr al-Abd is a unique and significant Hellenistic palace located in the Wadi as-Seer, approximately 20 kilometers west of Amman near Iraq al-Amir. It was constructed in the early 2nd century BC by Hyrcanus of Jerusalem, a prominent member of the Tobiad family, though it remained unfinished following his death. The palace is notable for the massive size of its limestone blocks, some of which are up to seven meters long, showcasing advanced ancient engineering. Its facades are adorned with intricate carved reliefs of lions and leopards, which are among the finest examples of sculpture from that period in the region. Originally, the structure was surrounded by an artificial lake, creating a grand and defensive island-like setting for the ruler's residence. Despite suffering extensive damage during the earthquake of 363 AD, partial reconstruction has preserved this rare example of Hellenistic architecture in the Middle East.
