Ikaho Onsen
Ikaho Onsen, perched on the slopes of Mount Haruna, is one of Gunma Prefecture's most distinguished spa towns. The heart of the town is its iconic 365-step stone staircase (Ishidan-gai), lined with traditional ryokans, shops, and old-fashioned teahouses. Visitors are drawn here to experience two unique types of thermal waters: the iron-rich 'Golden Water' (Kogane-no-Yu) and the clear 'Silver Water' (Shirogane-no-Yu), both revered for their extensive health benefits. Beyond the soaking tubs, the area features natural wonders like Lake Haruna and the vermilion Kajika Bridge, which is particularly dramatic during the autumn foliage season. The town’s terraced layout provides panoramic views of the surrounding Kanto mountain ranges, creating a nostalgic atmosphere of old-world Japan. Strolling through the streets in a yukata robe is a quintessential part of the Ikaho experience. Food lovers should try the local specialty, Mizusawa Udon, ranked as one of Japan's top three types of udon. The town is also credited as the birthplace of onsen manju (sweet steamed buns). Accessible from Tokyo via direct bus or train to Shibukawa, Ikaho is a great retreat. Autumn is the peak season for scenery, while winter provides a magical contrast between the steaming outdoor baths and the crisp mountain air.
