Nikko (Japan)

Weather…

Nikko is a place of deep spiritual significance and architectural splendor. Its centerpiece is the Toshogu Shrine, the opulent mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Unlike many simple Japanese temples, this shrine is lavishly decorated with gold leaf and intricate carvings, including the famous 'Three Wise Monkeys.' The harmonious integration of the buildings into the ancient cedar forest creates a solemn and powerful atmosphere. Beyond cultural treasures, the Nikko National Park gives spectacular natural experiences. The Shinkyo Bridge at the entrance to the shrines is considered one of Japan's most beautiful bridges. Further up in the mountains, you will find Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, one of the country's highest waterfalls. Nikko's gastronomy is famous for Yuba (tofu skin), a local delicacy served in many variations. Reach Nikko via train from Tokyo (Tobu or JR lines). Nikko is beautiful year-round, but the autumn foliage season (Koyo) from mid to late October is absolutely spectacular. The cool mountain air provides a welcome relief in summer from the intense heat of the major cities.
