Mount Asama
Mount Asama is an active complex volcano situated on the border between Gunma and Nagano prefectures on the Japanese island of Honshu. Standing at an elevation of 2,568 meters, it is a triple-strato volcano composed of several overlapping volcanic cones. The volcano is historically significant for its numerous eruptions, most notably the devastating Tenmei eruption of 1783, which caused widespread famine and significant loss of life across the region. Asama is classified as one of Japan's most active volcanoes and is monitored extensively by the Japan Meteorological Agency due to its proximity to populated areas and its frequent seismic activity. The surrounding landscape, including the Onioshidashi volcanic rock park, was dramatically reshaped by cooling lava flows from past events. Today, it remains a focal point for geological research and a popular destination for hikers, although access to the crater is often restricted depending on current volcanic alert levels. Its prominent peak is a landmark of the Karuizawa region.
