The Ébrié Lagoon stretches for approximately 100 kilometers along the southern coast of Ivory Coast, covering a total surface area of about 560 square kilometers. It is separated from the Gulf of Guinea by a narrow sandy strip and reaches a maximum width of roughly four kilometers. The lagoon's economic strategic importance surged following the 1950 completion of the Vridi Canal, which linked Abidjan directly to the Atlantic Ocean, establishing the city as West Africa's premier deep-water port. The lagoon consists of a brackish water ecosystem fed by several rivers, most notably the Comoé. Its shores host both the modern districts of Abidjan and traditional fishing villages inhabited by the Ébrié ethnic group. While industrially vital, the lagoon currently faces significant environmental challenges, including pollution from urban runoff and maritime traffic. Nevertheless, it remains a critical transportation corridor and a fundamental resource for local artisanal and commercial fishing operations.
