Berbera Cement Plant (Somalia)

Weather…

The Berbera Cement Plant is a major industrial facility in Somaliland, located about 15 km southeast of the port city of Berbera. The plant was built in the 1980s but was heavily damaged and shut down during the civil war. After a comprehensive rehabilitation by DP World and local investors, the plant resumed operations in 2021. Its production capacity is around 500,000 tonnes of cement per year. The plant uses local limestone deposits and produces various cement types, including Portland cement. The restart created about 500 direct jobs and many indirect ones. Cement is sold primarily in Somaliland, neighboring regions of Somalia, and Ethiopia. The plant reduces import dependence and boosts the local construction industry. Challenges include high energy costs and logistics. The plant is a key example of post-conflict industrial revival.
