💡 Tips

  • Walk the Rilke Path (Sentiero Rilke) at sunset for the most spectacular views over the Adriatic cliffs.
  • Check the opening hours of Duino Castle in advance, as they change significantly depending on the season.
  • Be aware of the 'Bora' wind; this local gale can be fiercely strong, so hold onto your hats and cameras.
  • Parking near the castle is tough; use the designated lots on the edge of town and walk into the center.

Rilke Path (Early Morning)

Duino is beautifully situated on the Gulf of Trieste and is famous for its impressive Castello di Duino, which perches majestically on a rock above the sea. The town combines Habsburg elegance with the Italian way of life. A highlight for nature lovers is the Rilke Path, a panoramic trail along the cliffs connecting Duino with Sistiana, named after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Hidden below the cliffs lies the Spiaggia del Principe, an exclusive beach section with crystal-clear water, named after the princely family Thurn und Taxis. The region provides excellent gastronomy with a blend of seafood and Central European influences. Visitors can enjoy the history-steeped atmosphere and explore the old port. Access is straightforward via the A4 motorway or the scenic coastal road Strada Costiera from Trieste.
