The Royal Palace of Caserta, or Reggia di Caserta, is a former royal residence in Caserta, southern Italy. It was constructed by the Bourbon kings of Naples as their main residence in the 18th century. In terms of volume, it was the largest palace and one of the largest buildings erected in Europe during the 18th century. The project was started in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples, who worked closely with his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli, to create a palace and setting that could rival Versailles and the Royal Palace of Madrid. The palace has more than 1,200 rooms, two dozen state apartments, and a large theatre. The vast park stretches for 120 hectares and includes a spectacular Grand Cascade and an English Garden. The complex is an exceptional example of the monumental architecture of the Baroque and a symbol of the power and ambition of the Bourbon monarchy. In 1997, the palace, along with the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli and the San Leucio Complex, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
