Pompeii was an ancient city located near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy. Along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, Pompeii was destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The ash preserved the city largely intact, creating a unique snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried. Its rediscovery in 1748 sparked a renewed interest in classical antiquity and helped spawn the Neoclassical movement. Archaeologists found remarkably well-preserved buildings, frescoes, everyday objects, and plaster casts of victims, which revealed the poses they were in when they died. Important sites include the Forum, the Amphitheatre, the House of the Vettii, and the Villa of the Mysteries. These findings have provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the daily life, art, architecture, and social structure of a Roman city of the 1st century AD. Pompeii has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world.
