Caserta, the capital of the eponymous province in Campania, is inextricably linked to its main attraction: the Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta). This vast 18th-century palace was designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli for the Bourbon kings of Naples, intended to rival the Palace of Versailles. With over 1,200 rooms, vast courtyards, and sumptuous state apartments, it is the largest royal palace in the world by volume. The palace complex, including its expansive park with cascades, fountains, and a botanical garden, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The park stretches for 3 kilometers, culminating in a spectacular waterfall fed by the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, another engineering marvel of the era. Beyond the palace, Caserta is a modern city with a medieval core (Casertavecchia) located in the nearby hills, which is well worth a visit. Culinarily, the region is famous for its buffalo mozzarella. Caserta is easily accessible by train from Naples, making it a well-suited day trip. To fully enjoy the palace and gardens, spring and autumn are the best seasons, as the summers can be very hot.
