Basilica of San Zeno (Italy)

Weather…

The Basilica of San Zeno in Verona is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, dedicated to the city's patron saint, Zeno of Verona. Constructed primarily between 1123 and 1135, the current structure stands on the site of several previous churches dating back to the 4th century. The facade is famous for its large rose window, known as the "Wheel of Fortune," and its magnificent bronze doors featuring 48 intricately carved panels depicting biblical scenes. Inside, the church houses the tomb of Saint Zeno and the celebrated San Zeno Altarpiece, a triptych painted by Andrea Mantegna in the 15th century. The basilica gained literary fame as the traditional setting for the marriage of Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare's play. Its detached bell tower, started in 1045, remains one of the finest examples of Romanesque towers in Italy. Today, the basilica remains an active place of worship and a major cultural landmark attracting visitors from around the globe.
