Asiago Plateau (Italy)

Weather…

The Asiago Plateau (Altopiano di Asiago) is a high plateau in the Venetian Prealps, in the province of Vicenza, northern Italy. It lies at an average elevation of 1,000 m and covers about 550 km². The plateau is famous for its seven municipalities (Sette Comuni), which historically hosted the German-speaking Cimbrian minority. During World War I, it was a major battlefield (mountain warfare between Italy and Austria-Hungary). Numerous forts, trenches, and memorials testify to this period. The landscape is characterized by extensive forests, alpine pastures, and karst formations. Tourism is a key economic sector, with ski resorts such as Asiago and Gallio in winter and hiking in summer. Local cuisine is known for cheese (Asiago PDO), speck, and honey. The plateau is also known for its astronomical observatory and biodiversity, including the black grouse and golden eagle.
