Belvoir Fortress (Israel)

Weather…

Belvoir Fortress, also known as Kochav HaYarden, is one of the most complete and architecturally significant Crusader castles in the Levant. Perched on a 312-meter cliff overlooking the Jordan Valley, it was built by the Knights Hospitaller starting in 1168. The fortress is renowned for its innovative concentric design, featuring an inner square citadel enclosed within an outer square wall system, making it nearly impregnable. Following Saladin's victory at Hattin in 1187, Belvoir was one of the few strongholds to resist Ayyubid forces, enduring an 18-month siege before surrendering in early 1189. In 1220, the Ayyubid ruler of Damascus partially dismantled the fortress to prevent its reoccupation by Crusaders. Today, the basalt-stone ruins, including the 20-meter-wide dry moat and the massive vaulted halls, are preserved as a national park, offering some of the most panoramic views in Galilee and a masterclass in medieval siege defense.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
Exploring the expansive ruins allows visitors to walk through ancient courtyards, moats, and massive basalt fortifications. The open-air nature of the site means you can freely wander and examine the impressive crusader architecture from virtually every angle.
🕒
Typical hours
Since it is managed as a national park, the fortress usually adheres to standard park hours, opening early in the morning and closing shortly before sunset. Fridays and holiday eves might have earlier closing times, so checking the official park authority website in advance is highly recommended.
📷
Photography
The elevated vantage point provides impressive, unobstructed photographic opportunities of the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee. Golden hour light beautifully accentuates the dark basalt stones, while a wide lens will help capture the true scale of the defensive dry moats.
⏱️
Time needed
Most travelers find that one to two hours is perfectly adequate to walk around the entire perimeter, cross the dry moat, and explore the inner keep. If you wish to bring a picnic to enjoy the panoramic views, you might comfortably extend your stay into the afternoon.
Combine with
A visit here flows wonderfully into an itinerary exploring the wider Galilee region, including the ancient ruins of Beit She'an just to the south. Alternatively, heading down to the Sea of Galilee provides a relaxing lakeside finish to a day of historical sightseeing.
🧭
Getting there
Reaching this remote hilltop is primarily done by car, involving a winding but scenic drive up from the main valley road. A spacious parking lot is located directly at the entrance, making it a very straightforward stop for those on a road trip.
💡
Insider tip
Shade is incredibly scarce among the ruins, making the midday sun punishing during the summer months; always bring abundant drinking water and a good hat. Visiting in the early morning not only beats the extreme heat but often grants you the fortress almost entirely to yourself.
