Loughrea is a historic town in County Galway, beautifully positioned on the northern shore of Lough Rea lake. Established in 1236 by the Anglo-Norman lord Richard de Burgo, the town served as a strategic fortified settlement within the de Burgo lordship of Connacht. Loughrea holds the unique distinction of being the only town in Ireland to retain a functional, water-filled medieval moat, which once formed part of its defensive circuit. A major architectural and cultural landmark is St. Brendan's Cathedral, built at the turn of the 20th century; it is renowned globally for its interior decorations, which represent a peak of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement, particularly its stained glass by An Túr Gloine. The lake itself is a significant ecological site and a popular recreational resource, famous for its Blue Flag bathing areas and clear limestone waters. Archaeological evidence, including several lake dwellings known as crannogs, confirms that the area has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age. Modern Loughrea is a thriving commercial center and a desirable residential town, offering a high quality of life with its blend of medieval heritage and natural lakeside beauty.
