St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway is the largest medieval parish church in Ireland in continuous use since its foundation. Established in 1320, the church is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of seafarers, reflecting Galway's historical status as a bustling maritime port. Over the centuries, the building was significantly expanded by the '14 Tribes of Galway', the wealthy merchant families who funded various chapels and extensions. A popular local tradition suggests that Christopher Columbus prayed at the church in 1477 during a visit to the city before his historic voyage to the Americas. In 1652, during the Cromwellian occupation, the church suffered severe damage when it was used as a stable for horses by the occupying forces. Despite this history, the church retains many of its medieval features, including intricate stone carvings and a 16th-century baptismal font. Today, it remains a bustling center of worship and a key cultural venue in the heart of Galway's Latin Quarter.
