A festival of Irish traditional music in Gort over the October bank holiday weekend, honouring accordionist Joe Cooley and tin whistle player Kieran Collins. It features open pub sessions, concerts and competitions.
Gort is a historic market town in South County Cork, situated near the border with County Clare. The town is globally recognized for its profound connections to the Irish Literary Revival, particularly through its proximity to Coole Park, the former home of Lady Gregory. It was here that prominent writers, including W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and Edward Martyn, met to shape modern Irish literature. Yeats himself resided nearby at Thoor Ballylee, a restored 15th-century tower house. Architecturally, Gort features a spacious triangular market square and several fine Georgian buildings, reflecting its development under the Prendergast and Vereker families. The surrounding landscape is a unique karst limestone region characterized by underground rivers and turloughs, which are seasonal disappearing lakes. Another notable site is the nearby Kilmacduagh Monastery, featuring one of the tallest and most famous leaning round towers in Ireland. In recent years, Gort has become known for its diverse population, notably hosting a large Brazilian community that has added an animated multicultural dimension to the town.
