Longford is the county town of County Longford in the Irish Midlands, situated on the River Camlin and serving as a major link between Dublin and the Northwest. The town's origins are rooted in the medieval territory of the O'Farrell clan, though it was officially chartered in 1608 during the reign of King James I. A defining landmark of the town is St. Mel's Cathedral, a magnificent 19th-century neoclassical basilica that underwent one of Europe's largest restoration projects following a catastrophic fire on Christmas Day in 2009. Historically, Longford flourished as a market town, supported by the arrival of the Royal Canal and later the railway, which facilitated the trade of livestock and crops. The surrounding landscape is rich in archaeological significance, most notably the Corlea Trackway, an Iron Age bog road dating back to 148 BC. Today, Longford is an important administrative, educational, and commercial center for the Midlands, maintaining its traditional market atmosphere while diversifying into modern industry and services.
