Birr, historically known as Parsonstown, is a distinguished Georgian heritage town in County Offaly, located in the geographical center of Ireland. The town's layout and growth were dictated by its proximity to Birr Castle, the ancestral seat of the Earls of Rosse since the 17th century. Birr gained international scientific fame in 1845 when the Third Earl of Rosse completed the 'Leviathan of Parsonstown,' a massive reflecting telescope that remained the largest in the world until 1917. The town's architecture is characterized by wide, planned streets and elegant Georgian terraced houses, particularly surrounding Emmet Square. Situated at the confluence of the Camcor and Little Brosna rivers, the town historically thrived as a center for trade and milling. The demesne of the castle includes one of Ireland's most significant botanical gardens and the oldest suspension bridge in the country, dating to 1820. Birr was also a pivotal location for Irish mapping, serving as the central reference point for the national ordnance survey. Today, the town remains a bustling cultural hub, hosting the long-running Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival and preserving its rich scientific and architectural legacy.
