Dunguaire Castle is a photogenic 16th-century tower house situated on the shores of Galway Bay near the village of Kinvara. Built in 1520 by the O'Hynes clan, it is named after Guaire, the legendary 7th-century King of Connacht, whose ancient palace is said to have occupied the same site. The architecture is an excellent specimen of a restored Irish tower house, featuring a 75-foot high central keep and a defensive bawn wall. In the early 20th century, the castle was purchased and restored by Oliver St. John Gogarty, subsequently becoming a hub for leaders of the Irish Literary Revival, including W.B. Yeats and George Bernard Shaw. Today, Dunguaire is renowned for hosting medieval banquets that celebrate regional history, poetry, and traditional music. The castle's impressive reflection in the water during high tide makes it one of the most photographed landmarks in the west of Ireland. It remains a vital cultural stop along the Wild Atlantic Way, showcasing the fusion of medieval grit and literary elegance.
