Castlebar is the administrative capital and largest town of County Mayo in the west of Ireland. The town's name derives from a 11th-century castle built by the de Barry family, around which the settlement originally grew. Its most significant historical event is the Battle of Castlebar in 1798, famously dubbed the 'Races of Castlebar' after combined Franco-Irish forces led by General Humbert decisively routed a superior British garrison. Geographically, the town is tucked away on the banks of the Castlebar River and is characterized by its proximity to scenic lakes like Lough Lannagh, which features a popular urban greenway. Nearby, the National Museum of Ireland, Country Life at Turlough Park provides a world-class exhibition of Irish rural heritage between 1850 and 1950. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Castlebar evolved into a major commercial and transport hub for the Connacht province. Today, it is known as a spirited retail center, home to significant healthcare institutions and international events such as the Castlebar International Four Days Walks.
