New Ross is a historic port town situated on the River Barrow in County Wexford, founded in the 12th century by the legendary William Marshal. The town served as a strategic stronghold during the Norman expansion in Ireland and became one of the island's premier export hubs during the medieval period. A pivotal moment in its history was the Battle of New Ross in 1798, which remains one of the bloodiest engagements of the United Irishmen Rebellion. During the 19th century, its quays became a primary point of departure for thousands fleeing the Great Famine; this legacy is preserved today by the Dunbrody Famine Ship, a full-scale maritime replica. New Ross holds significant international ties as the ancestral home of the Kennedy family, with John F. Kennedy’s great-grandfather emigrating from the nearby Dunganstown. The contemporary local economy is driven by its inland commercial port and a robust tourism sector centered on historical heritage. The town's steep, narrow streets offer panoramic views of the Barrow valley and the fertile Wexford countryside.
