Tal Afar is located in northwestern Iraq, about 50 kilometers west of Mosul, and belongs to the Nineveh Governorate. The city is primarily known for its predominantly Turkmen population, giving it a unique cultural identity within the country. Historically, Tal Afar was a significant strategic outpost protected by a massive Ottoman citadel perched on a hill overlooking the city. This fortress was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, most recently suffering severe damage in 2014. The city's economy is traditionally based on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of grain and fruit in the fertile surrounding plains. Due to its location on the trade route between Mosul and the Syrian border, the city was for centuries a vital hub for the exchange of goods. In recent history, Tal Afar was the site of intense conflict but is today in a phase of reconstruction and social stabilization.
