Zakho is a significant city in the Duhok Governorate, located in the far north of Iraq near the Turkish border. Known as the 'Gateway to Iraq,' the city plays a decisive role in the cross-border trade and logistics sector. The most iconic landmark of Zakho is the Delal Bridge, an ancient stone bridge over the Khabur River, whose origins are often traced back to Roman or Assyrian times. This impressive structure consists of large limestone blocks and is considered one of the oldest preserved bridge structures in the region. Zakho has developed into a modern economic hub in recent decades, with the construction of new infrastructure and commercial centers shaping the cityscape. Historically, the city was also an important center for the Jewish community in Kurdistan until they emigrated almost entirely in the mid-20th century. Today, the city is a symbol of economic integration and cultural exchange in northern Mesopotamia.
