Mosul Lake, a large reservoir created by blocking the courses of the Tigris River using the most massive dam in Iraq, is located in the northern territory of the Ninawa province. With a total storage capacity of approximately 11.1 cubic kilometers and covering a perimeter of 380 square kilometers, this basin fulfills a major strategic role for the management of the national water and energy resources. The earth and rock embankment dam, which reaches a height of 113 meters, was designed and erected in the 1980s, its official inauguration taking place in 1986. Given that the structure was anchored on an unstable geological layer of gypsum, vulnerable to water erosion, its stability is maintained by the daily injection of large volumes of liquid cement directly into the foundation.
