Hatra (Iraq)

Weather…

Hatra, a fortified ruined city in the Nineveh Governorate of northern Iraq, was the capital of the first Arab Kingdom. It reached its peak in the 2nd century AD as a major religious and commercial hub along the Silk Road. The city is famous for its massive circular defensive walls, which successfully withstood several Roman sieges, including those led by emperors Trajan and Septimius Severus. Architecturally, Hatra gives a unique fusion of Hellenistic, Roman, and Parthian styles, particularly evident in the large temple complexes at the center of the site. The central temple district honored solar deities like Shamash and featured intricate sculptures and reliefs. Hatra was destroyed in 241 AD by the Sasanian Empire and has remained uninhabited since. In 1985, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the best-preserved examples of a Parthian metropolis.
