Delal Bridge (Iraq)

Weather…

The Delal Bridge, spanning the Khabur River in the city of Zakho, is one of the most renowned ancient stone bridges in Iraqi Kurdistan. Its exact date of construction is debated, with estimates ranging from the Roman era to the early Islamic period. The 114-meter-long structure consists of five arches, with the dominant central arch reaching a height of 15 meters. A notable feature of the bridge is that its massive limestone blocks were fitted together without the use of mortar or binding materials. According to local folklore, the master builder sacrificed his own daughter at the foundations to ensure the stability of the central arch. Although reinforced several times during the 20th century due to floods, its original structure remains largely intact and is now restricted to pedestrian traffic.
