Erbil Citadel (Iraq)

Weather…

The Erbil Citadel is a fortified settlement located atop a 32-meter-high mound (tell) and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Archaeological evidence suggests that settlement at the site dates back to at least the 5th millennium BC. The current appearance of the citadel is dominated by a dense ring of Ottoman-period houses that form a nearly continuous defensive-like facade. The mound itself was formed over millennia by the successive layering of mud-brick structures. Within the walls, there are historic alleys, traditional hammams, and magnificent courtyard houses belonging to former wealthy merchants. Its strategic location in the heart of Erbil made it a vital junction between Anatolia and Mesopotamia throughout history. In 2014, the citadel was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its outstanding socio-cultural and historical significance.
