Falak-ol-Aflak Castle (Iran)

Weather…

Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, translated as the 'Sky of Skies,' is a magnificent Sasanian-era fortress perched on a high hill in the center of Khorramabad. Built in the 3rd century AD during the reign of Shapur I, it served as a vital military stronghold and administrative hub for the Lorestan region for centuries. The fortress covers an area of approximately 5,300 square meters and is enclosed by massive walls that originally featured twelve defensive towers, eight of which remain standing today. Its architectural highlights include two spacious internal courtyards and a remarkable 40-meter deep well carved directly into the bedrock to ensure a steady water supply during sieges. Throughout the centuries, the castle has been utilized and expanded by various dynasties, including the Buyids and Safavids, serving as a treasury, barracks, and even a prison. Today, Falak-ol-Aflak houses a prominent anthropological and archaeological museum, showcasing the region's rich tribal heritage and the famous Lorestan Bronzes.
