Sonamarg
Sonamarg, meaning 'Meadow of Gold,' is a sweeping alpine valley in Kashmir, situated along the banks of the Sindh River. It serves as the gateway to Ladakh, marking the transition from the lush greenery of Kashmir to the stark high-altitude desert beyond the Zoji La pass. The name comes from the golden hues that bathe the valley when the sun shines on its wildflower-covered meadows and towering snow peaks. The most popular attraction is the Thajiwas Glacier, easily reachable by a short hike or pony ride, where visitors can experience snow even in the peak of summer. Sonamarg is a trekker's paradise, being the starting point for the legendary 'Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.' The gushing Sindh River is also famous for white-water rafting and trout fishing. Local hospitality shines in the small eateries offering traditional Kashmiri tea and warming meat-based dishes. The drive from Srinagar takes about 3 hours, passing through the beautiful Ganderbal district. Due to heavy snowfall, Sonamarg remains inaccessible and closed during winter, typically from November to April. The best time to visit is from May to October. For spiritual travelers, the nearby Baltal serves as a major base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
