Jallianwala Bagh (India)

Weather…

Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar is a national memorial site that commemorates one of the most tragic episodes of British colonial rule in India. On April 13, 1919, during the Baisakhi festival, thousands of unarmed civilians gathered in this walled public garden to peacefully protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act. Without warning, Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on the crowd, systematically blocking the only narrow exit available. The firing continued for about ten minutes, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries according to historical estimates. Many victims jumped into a well within the garden to escape the bullets, a spot now known as the 'Martyrs' Well'. This massacre served as a critical turning point in the Indian independence movement, sparking nationwide outrage and leading leaders like Mahatma Gandhi to call for full non-cooperation with the British Raj. Today, the memorial features a central pylon, an eternal flame, and preserved walls that still bear bullet marks, standing as a somber reminder of the struggle for freedom.
