Nubra Valley, often called the 'Orchard of Ladakh,' has a remarkable contrast of lush green villages and stark, high-altitude sand dunes. Located at the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, it was once a strategic gateway on the Silk Road. The most iconic sight is Hunder, famous for its silver-grey sand dunes where rare double-humped Bactrian camels roam, offering a desert-like experience amidst the towering Himalayas. Beyond its unique terrain, the valley is home to grand spiritual sites like the Diskit Monastery, which features a magnificent 32-meter tall Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley floor. Villages like Turtuk, with its distinct Balti culture and apricot orchards, provide a unique cultural immersion. Food lovers can enjoy locally grown apricots, fresh sea buckthorn juice, and traditional Ladakhi bread in the various homestays. Reaching Nubra Valley involves an adventurous drive over the Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The journey from Leh typically takes about 5 hours. Travelers require an Inner Line Permit. The best time to visit is from June to September, when the weather is pleasant and the landscape is at its most animated.
