Orchha
Orchha, once the capital of the Bundela Rajputs, seems frozen in time. Situated on the scenic Betwa River, the town houses some of the best-preserved palace complexes in India. The architectural ensemble uniquely combines Hindu and Mughal influences. The majestic Jahangir Mahal is the highlight, built in honor of the Mughal emperor. Other sights include the Chaturbhuj Temple with its high spires and the imposing Chhatris (cenotaphs) of the royal family along the riverbank. The Ram Raja Temple is unique, as Lord Rama is worshiped here as a reigning king rather than just a deity. Nature lovers enjoy the Betwa River for rafting tours and the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding forests. The interior walls of many temples are adorned with colorful Bundela paintings. Local gastronomy gives authentic Central Indian flavors in a relaxed setting. Orchha is located near Jhansi and is easily accessible by train. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is cool and the monuments shine in the clear light. Orchha is for history buffs looking to travel off the beaten path.
