Great Stupa at Sanchi (India)

Weather…

The Great Stupa at Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh is one of India's oldest stone structures and a pivotal monument of Buddhist art. Originally commissioned by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the edifice was later expanded and encased in stone during the Shunga period in the 2nd century BCE. The stupa consists of a massive hemispherical dome designed to house relics of the Buddha, topped by a stylized umbrella symbol known as a chatra. It is most famous for its four elaborately carved stone gateways, or toranas, which were added in the 1st century BCE. These gateways are covered with detailed narrative reliefs depicting the Jataka tales and scenes from the Buddha's life, though the Buddha himself is only represented through symbols like footprints or a wheel. Sanchi remained a major religious center until the 12th century CE before falling into obscurity and being rediscovered in 1818 by General Taylor. In 1989, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its preservation of early Buddhist architecture.
