Positioned in the extreme northwestern corner of Hungary within Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Jánossomorja is a border town adjacent to Austria. The modern municipality was established in 1970 through the amalgamation of three historical villages: Mosonszentjános, Mosonszentpéter, and Pusztasomorja. Located on the edge of the Hanság marshlands, the town's 20th-century economy was heavily reliant on large-scale industrial peat extraction. The demographic history of the region is characterized by a high concentration of ethnic Danube Swabians, who settled the area post-Ottoman rule and drove its agricultural success until their mass expulsion in 1946. Home to roughly 6,000 residents, Jánossomorja's contemporary economy is dictated by its proximity to the Austrian border crossing at Andau. This advantageous location has transformed the town into a hub for cross-border commuters and international logistics operations seeking a foothold near Western Europe.
