Votive Church of Szeged (Hungary)

Weather…

The Votive Church of Szeged, commonly known as the Cathedral, is a magnificent Neo-Romanesque landmark and a symbol of the city's resilience. Following the devastating Great Flood of 1879, which destroyed 95% of Szeged, the citizens made a solemn vow to build a grand church if their city was successfully reconstructed. Designed by Frigyes Schulek and Ernő Foerk, construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1930, resulting in one of Hungary's largest ecclesiastical buildings. Its most striking features are the twin towers, each rising to 81 meters, and the intricate brickwork and mosaics of the exterior. The interior is equally panoramic, featuring colorful frescoes and one of Europe's largest pipe organs, consisting of over 9,000 pipes. The vast Cathedral Square surrounding the church is equal in size to St. Mark's Square in Venice and hosts the prestigious Szeged Open-Air Festival every summer. The church remains a focal point of Hungarian Catholicism and a masterpiece of early 20th-century architectural ambition.
