The confluence of the Mures River with the Tisza, located near the city of Szeged, is a prominent geographic feature and a vital ecological hub in southern Hungary. The Mures, originating in the Romanian Carpathians, carries vast amounts of fine silt and mica, which often gives its waters a distinctively turbid, yellowish hue compared to the darker Tisza. At the point where they meet near Ujszeged, the color contrast between the two rivers is frequently visible for several kilometers downstream, providing a fascinating natural spectacle. The floodplains surrounding the confluence are part of a protected landscape area, supporting dense gallery forests and a wealth of aquatic biodiversity. Historically, the mouth of the Mures was a strategic point for riverine trade, serving as the primary route for transporting salt and timber from Transylvania to the Great Hungarian Plain. Today, the area is a popular recreational spot for locals and anglers, while the volatile nature of the Mures necessitates constant vigilance from water management authorities.
