Lake Szelid (Hungary)

Weather…

Lake Szelid is the fifth largest natural lake in Hungary, located in Bács-Kiskun County near Dunapataj. It originally formed from an oxbow of the Danube River, which became separated from the main stream through river regulation and natural sedimentation. Spanning approximately 4 kilometers in length and 150-200 meters in width, it occupies a horseshoe-shaped basin. The water is highly alkaline, rich in sodium chloride and magnesium, providing it with a distinctive turbidity and medicinal qualities. The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve and part of the Kiskunság National Park, holding significant ecological and tourism value. Settlements existed in its vicinity as early as the 12th century, indicating the historical importance of this wetland within the drier regions of the Great Hungarian Plain.
