Kalocsa Cathedral (Hungary)

Weather…

The Kalocsa Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is the seat of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét and a masterpiece of Baroque architecture in Hungary. The present structure is the fourth church built on this historic site, as previous cathedrals founded during the reign of King Saint Stephen were destroyed during the Mongol and Ottoman invasions. Constructed between 1735 and 1754 based on designs by architect Andreas Mayerhoffer, the cathedral features a grand facade with twin towers reaching 65 meters in height. The interior is lavishly decorated with intricate stucco work by Lodovico Quadri and magnificent frescoes that cover the vaulted ceilings. A notable historical treasure is the cathedral's organ, which was played several times by the world-renowned composer Franz Liszt, who praised its unique sound. The crypt beneath the main floor serves as the final resting place for the archbishops of Kalocsa and houses the relics of Saint Astrik, the first archbishop of the city. Together with the adjacent Archbishop's Palace, the cathedral forms the heart of Kalocsa's religious and cultural life, preserving centuries of Hungarian ecclesiastical history.
